Scents From Your Garden - How To Create Them

Scents from your garden, don't have one? No worries! Every city, town and village has a local farmer or farmer's market. Some of the most aromatic scents are produced from their fields. Don't feel like venturing out? Grow your own.

I thought I wanted to grow my own garden at one time and my landscaper convinced me that I wasn't very good at it. But he did set up a small section right outside my front door and it was the most aromatic space in my yard. By the way, he didn't charge extra.

He planted Jasmine, some Rose bushes, lilies, tuberose and Peppermint. He said that typically peppermint would be placed in a vegetable garden to keep the rodents and squirrels out and that he wanted to do the same thing here for the flowers.

So he suggested that I have a container garden. This way I could have everything on my sun porch and have access to real herbs. My problem with outdoor gardens was that I'd be out of town a lot and my poor garden would burn up and be overridden with bugs.

What the pot garden has allowed me to do, is enjoy the aromas of herbs and when I feel like having a truly natural scented body oil, I can experiment by taking them straight from my gardenť.

Sage, mint, spearmint, peppermint, lemongrass and lavender are all great herbs for pot gardens.

You will also find cucumbers and rosemary in a garden at any given time. Not only will you find these goodies in your garden space, you can bring their aromas into your home via recipes.

Garden Scents for your Foods

Rosemary infused olive oil makes a great oil for salads and cooking.

2 cups of olive oil
6-8 sprigs of rosemary – Green part – no hard dry twigs or stems
1-2 cloves of garlic
3-4 peppercorns
1 dried hot chili pepper if you like things hot
½ to 1 teaspoon of coarse sea salt

Mint, whether it's spearmint or peppermint will enhance your food as well as your bath items.

Garden Scents for your Bath

A relaxing bath might include herbal scents of mint, basil and coriander. While the recipe will use less mint, it is a very intense fragrance.
1 cup of sea salt
30 drops of coriander essential oil
10 drops of basil essential oil
6 drops of spearmint essential oil
20 drops of bergamot essential oil

Place the sea salt in a glass bowl and add the essential oils drop by drop. Stir well with chop sticks or wooden skews.

Place your fragrant salts into a jar or bottle with a tight lid. Let your salts sit for a week. This should provide enough salts for two baths.

Remember, garden scents produce great aromatic blends whether it’s from the ground or your patio pot garden.
