Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

There really is no reason to eat super-sugared treats any more. These Reese's cups have 50% less sugar and taste delicious!

Like I always say, it is really scary when you realize how much sugar is in typical junk food. This package is of mini cups. The NORMAL mini cup is loaded with 19g of sugar per serving! This low carb version has only 9g. That is still much more than eating fresh fruit, but if you are going to eat chocolate, this is FAR better than the regular version.

How does it taste? They really are quite tasty. There is the crisp outer chocolate shell, the smooth peanut butter inside. They are in fact made by Reese's so this isn't some cheap imitation. They made sure it worked well before they decided to come out with it.

There is a bit of a powdered-sugar flavor to it, but not much. It's not like they took all the sugar out - the ingredient list still goes -

peanuts, sugar, cocoa butter ...

so they just substituted sucralose and sugar alcohols for some of the sugar - not all of it. This is probably why it tastes so similar. As always, if you are sensitive to sugar alcohols, take tiny nibbles first. Most people don't have any reaction to sugar alcohols, but those few people who do get very grumpy when they have the stomach problems.

Well worth it for those craving a taste of chocolate - although with the 9g count, I would personally still go for the 0g chocolates on the market that taste luxurious and delicious!

I'll make a note here that my boyfriend thinks they are a little "sandy". I suppose I can see that, but I don't mind the texture at all.

2010 Update: I wrote this first update in 2005, and it appears over the years they have refined and perfected their recipe. We don't find any hint of sandiness or grittiness in them now. They are immensely tasty! I always limit myself to 3. I take 3 out of the bag, put them out as my evening treat, and nibble at them. That way I enjoy the chocolate flavor, relish the peanut butter, and minimize the sugar alcohol impact on my stomach.
