Majesty Expansion Pack Preview

Goblin Overlord
This afternoon, my son James and I went out to visit Cyberlore, home of Majesty, a fun strategy/sim game that I reviewed recently. We enjoy playing the game a great deal, and were eager to learn more about the new upcoming expansion pack, The Northern Expansion.

First we spoke with one of the most talented teams I'd ever met in the gaming industry - incredible artists, talented sound men, proficient programmers. The requisite cans of Coke and copies of 'library software' - i.e. every strategy game known to mankind - were in residence. We moved on to the office, and the actual working copy of the expansion pack.

Greater Gorgon
This is when the fun began. There were many new quests available in the northern reaches of the map. Selecting one, we quickly discovered that the new buildings available were fascinating. A Magic Bazaar allowed us to research and use various potions. The Outpost gave us the ability to locate a "mini-palace" off somewhere safe, so if our main palace was destroyed, we still had a chance of surviving.

Our favorite, however, was the Sorcerers Abode. Besides just looking extremely cool, it had all sorts of great features. We used 'gate' quite a bit. This sucked heroes that wandered near the Abode through a dimensional portal, to appear whereever we set the other end of the gate.

Think of the possibilities! You set up your Hall of Champions near the Sorcerers Abode, and gather a large group of heroes. You then Call to Arms, activate the gate, and *POOF* they are now all at the center of your enemy's city.

Mausoleum
There were other buildings as well. A Mausoleum allows you to store your dead heroes, resurrecting them when you need them. The Embassy lets you recruit heroes from off map.

Never mind hordes of new monsters! There are different levels of many of your typical monsters, plus horrific new fields such as the 'abomination'! Don't even ask how long it took us to deal with that critter!

But, as those commercials on TV always say, that's not all! MultiPlay, which of course is the life's blood for games like this, has been greatly enhanced. Tired of those regular sized maps? Try a HUGE map that requires 128mb RAM to load! This thing is massive, and calls for new strategy when it takes your units 5 minutes to get back to base when trouble comes knocking.

How about a multiplayer setup that lets you set up special events, like random earthquakes, or special monster invasions, or other such things. It lets you edit the available buildings for the same - saying you can only build 2 of one building, and maybe none of another. Try a game with gnomes only, and see how you do!

In all, it appears that CyberLore spent a lot of time, and took into account a wide range of user input, to gather up what to make available in this new expansion pack. We were extremely impressed with what they had to offer, and are going to be counting the days until it comes on the market. We'll let you know as soon as it is close!
