When you first get to the Nexus, there's only a few people there to interact with. Don't worry, as you play more people will show up to hang out with!

Black Maiden - the Navi type glowy spot who welcomes you. She then vanishes for a while, but when she returns she'll be the person who takes your souls in exchange for upgrading stats.

Blue Guy - another sad ghost who mopes

Blacksmith - Boldwin - he sounds like Patrick Stewart to me. He sells or fixes weapons. Nobody buys items here. armor is pretty rare so if you have it, treasure it!

Stockpile Thomas - he abandoned his wife and daughter apparently. He simply sits and holds your unwanted items. Note that anything he has can be "used" by the blacksmith, i.e. you don't have to transfer items into your inventory to then go give them to the blacksmith.
