Children watch too much TV. In fact, there are so many electronic gadgets in their homes. Children play too many computer games, watch too much television and DVD and listen to MP3 too often. For this reason, a week is set aside each year to remind children there are other forms of entertainment. The week’s name is simple, Turn Off TV week.
Reading is one form of entertainment for children to explore during Turn Off TV week. Help children turn on to the board, picture and chapter books for children. Children can open a book and travel, learn a new sport, sail a pirate ship or solve a mystery.
Spring is in the air. It is easy to take a book outside. There, children can partake of the fresh air and sunshine while enjoying a book. Get a book to identify the birds in the trees. Better yet, get a book and discover the names of the blooming trees and shrubs. A gardening book will help in planting a garden.
Children who are looking forward to learning a new sport can get a book on the subject. Okay, there is information on the internet, but a book is easier to take outdoors. A book on skateboarding will have a list of necessary equipment. The book will list moves and tricks with directions. A book wins over the computer.
Remember it is spring. Turn off the television. Put down the remote control. Grab a book. Come outside with me and enjoy the sunshine. Turn Off! Turn On! Hopefully, children will watch less television and enjoy other stimulating activities.
Berenstain Bears and Too Much TV Mama Bear does not like her Bear family watching so much TV. She declares Too Much TV Week. The picture book is a good one to explain the week’s idea to children (ages: 4-8).
