Leaping Horse Merlot

A definite best buy wine. This wine is perfect for dinner or friendly conversation.

Recently I was wandering down the wine aisle at the local supermarket. I don't usually buy my wine there, but one bottle caught my eye. It was a 1.5 liter bottle of Leaping Horse Merlot, for $6.99. Mmmmm, this could be an exceptional find, or really bad. I decided to take a chance. The leap of faith was well worth it. This deep red wine can be described as a gift from Ironstone Vineyards in Lodi, California.

I first opened the bottle and poured into my red wine glasses to breathe. My husband tasted it and proclaimed that it was too sweet. I tasted and agreed, but urged that we let it breathe and see how the flavors developed. By the time I was done cooking our steaks the wine had opened up. It then revealed enjoyable flavors and a friendly quality.

As promised by the first taste, this Merlot has prominent fruit flavors, especially berry. The juice and medium body give it a nice feel in the mouth. The finish is clean and simple, with good tannins. It has 13.5% alcohol by volume. It is dry enough to pair with steak. The next night it accompanied smoked wild Alaska salmon and Mesculin salad.

If you are looking for a party wine that won't break the budget, this is an excellent choice. It's accessible nature will be a crowd pleaser.
