The Greek Heroic Age

The Greek Heroic Age was the time when legends were made. The tales we use in describing Ancient Greece mainly come from this period. The heart of Greek tradition hails from its great Heroic Period and the glorious civilization of the Mycenae.

The rise of the Mycenaean civilization has been estimated at 1600 B.C. This was the time of legends. The growth of Greek mythology began in this era. The grandeur of the palaces and the mighty warriors were the seeds of myths. It was during this time throughout the entire Mycenaean existence that the heroes of Greece grew to supernatural heights. Men became gods. Warriors became the children of gods. Heavenly power was given to mortals. There has been no other time in history were such heroes were created.

The interactions between the gods and men were intricate and never simple. The Greeks explained the world around them through the exploits of the gods. Seduction, death, and vengeance filled the tales of men who lived long ago. The legends became soap-operas. They captivated the imagination and gave men and women pride to claim gods and demi-gods as their ancestors. Cities were based on mythological bloodlines. The legends grew as the years went by. The heroes were worshiped.

The works of Homer put the final touches on the masterpiece of the Greek Heroic Age. His epic poems of the Trojan War gave us more heroes to obsess about. The majesty of King Agamemnon, the prowess of Achilles, the bravery of Hector, the foolishness of Paris, the beauty of Helen, the determination of Odysseus, the adventures of the brave still linger in our minds and have inspired books, movies, paintings, and sculptures.

The heroes were believed in. Alexander the Great took the legendary armor of Achilles that was given to him by the gods. Alexander wore it in battle despite the fact that it made him stand out for the enemy to easily pick out. There was no question that the heroes had lived.

The Greek Heroic Age was the time of Mycenaean might. Their warriors created the Heroic Age. Their exploits to settle the Mediterranean gave them an aura of mystery and myth. They built palaces that were beautiful and well designed. They developed warriors and a navy that conquered all before them. It was a time where small feats became mythical achievements. The retelling of adventures created the legends we now today.
