Subway on Low Carb / Atkins

Subway has teamed up with Atkins to create a new low carb wrap menu. Talk about delicious! This is one pairing that is perfect for low carb dieters.

There are two wraps right now. First, the chicken bacon ranch. At only 8g net carbs, it's quite low in carb counts and perfect for anyone not in induction. We've found this to be incredibly tasty! Usually I have them cut the wrap in half, which means each pocket has a "bottom" to keep in the bits. I've never had anything fall out of it, it is very easy to eat.

Second, the turkey and bacon melt. This is a bit higher, 10g net carbs. Still, that's easily within range of most people. It's got a nice combo of flavors and is well loved by many of my testers. Not only that, but every time we go into a Subway to test them out, we find people all around us ordering and enjoying the wraps, too.

Now, for the iffy part. Subway is of course a franchise (one of the top in the world for the past 10 years running). Meaning there are thousands of these things everywhere, each with its own owner. The official line is that Subway shops should offer the wrap version of a sub at 50 cents more, to cover the increased cost of the wrap vs homemade bread. That certainly sounds fair enough, if not even generous.

However, each owner handles this in his or her own way. We've asked for the same low carb version of a sub at many different franchise locations and gotten a wide range of prices. Some tag on 50 cents. Some leave the price the same but charge for changes in condiments. Some will offer a special monthly sub but charge full price for the wrap version.

Not only that, but we explicitly ask for the price before we place our order. We've been told one price and then been charged a much higher price by the check-out person. More than once.

So in general this is a FANTASTIC deal that gives you really healthy, really great tasting food. But your milage can vary greatly depending what Subway you go to. Be sure to try 2 or 3 in your area to figure out who will give you the best deal - and then reward them with your patronage!

MARCH 2009 UPDATE:
Subway has now completely abandoned ALL WRAPS from their menu. I highly recommend you go to McDonalds, Burger King or Wendy's instead to get their wraps and salads.
