I´ve personally been on Atkins since June 03 and reached my desired weight. I´ve held it without any effort or problem. My boyfriend, who began at over 300 pounds, dropped down to 230 within 6 months. He still has more to go, but even the current weight change has made a HUGE difference in his life. He has been gaining energy since he began. I have many other friends and family members who have successfully lost weight - and kept it off - by using these diets.
It comes down to eating healthily. If you diet and then when you reach your weight start eating tons of junk food into you, you´re going to gain weight. That´s a fact of life. This is not a "diet" as much as a new way of eating healthily every day. Eat healthy food, exercise moderately, and you will maintain a weight you enjoy.
Note that low carb is NOT a diet of "sacrifice". You´re always full, and always eating delicious food! You can have filet mignon, lobster, asparagus, delicious homemade ice cream. This is in fact a diet of luxury and flavor.
