Summer is gone and the leaves start to turn golden hues of brown. This dramatic change announces the beginning of the fall season, and perhaps a rise in stress for many women. This sudden rise in stress is often due to the change of seasons, preparing kids for going back to school, and the impending holidays filled with work overload, holiday cooking, and stress filled family reunions. A small bit of stress might motivate some people and keep them actively involved in what is going on around them. As many know, too much stress reduces the body's ability to function properly and deal with everyday problems. In fact, stress overload leads to several emotional problems that include everything from anger to depression. Prolonged stress causes several health problems and diminishes the body's ability to fight disease. And it is certainly not too early to start thinking about effective ways to deal with holiday stress. Here are a few tips.
Thinking positive thoughts defeats negative emotions. Studies show that those who are able to place a positive spin on a stressed filled situation effectively reduces the anxieties and emotions that accompany stress.
Ignore Negative Thoughts
Make simple changes to the way you think to have control over stress. Ignore the negative voice in your head. Mentally say stop when that negative voice starts and replace that destructive voice with an encouraging thought or positive emotion.
Smiling is actually a tension buster. What may have started out as a stress filled situation might change when a smile lights up your face. Let that smile clear up your mood and diffuse the situation because smiling is certainly contagious.
During a stress-filled situation the heart races, breathing is shallow, and the mind fills with worry or anxiety. Take immediate control of the situation by stopping and breathing in air slowly and releasing the air out. Deep breathing helps to calm the body and fight some of the symptoms attributed to stress overload.
Many find that the best way to deal with stress build up is to get away for a few minutes or more. Distance yourself from the situation. Go for a walk outside in the fresh air. Or go into a quiet room and meditate for a few minutes.
