Five Ways to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

A large number of people gain weight during the holidays. After all it is hard to resist all those great holiday goodies and before you know it you've packed on extra weight. Those extra eggnog drinks, slices of fruit cake, and chocolate candies certainly add up quickly. And all the plans for healthy eating during the holiday are gone. Statistics indeed prove that the average person gains about five pounds or more during the holiday season. This is certainly unhealthy and may lead to significant health problems down the line. Here is how to ward off the dreaded holiday weight gain.

Plan Ahead
It is easier to avoid the holiday weight gain syndrome if you plan before the holiday season starts. It is essential to avoid attending parties on an empty stomach. Sure, it sounds like a good idea to abstain from eating all day long to save calories. This is actually self defeating. The odds are that your appetite is out of control from hunger and you overeat at the end of the day. Instead, try eating a healthy low calorie breakfast composed of fruit and drinking plenty of water throughout the day to curb appetite.

Portion Control
Practice portion control. Don't fill your plate with every food at the banquet table. Select a few foods in moderate proportion and take your time eating the foods. Really chew the food and enjoy each morsel. Drink water in between bites to fill you up.

Avoid Alcohol
Alcohol is packed with calories and reduces your control. It is proven that after sipping a few drinks of mind numbing alcohol many lose their self control and start to pig out. Avoid drinking at parties if possible. Instead try sipping water or club soda with just a dash of alcohol.

Cut Back on Sweets
Resistance is futile. Many people just can't refuse sampling sweet desserts at a party. Try limiting your desserts to one instead of sampling everything that they have to offer at the party.

Exercise
Rev up your exercise routine during the holiday season. Extra exercise might help to burn off a few extra calories and end the holiday weight gain syndrome. Get away from the house and go for a brisk walk outside for about 60 minutes. Or get on your exercise bike or treadmill for an hour each day. This should help you focus on bringing more activity into your life during the holiday and reducing weight gain.
