Lily Renee - A Book Review

Where can you learn history? There are museums, books, documentaries, and tourist sites. To many kids, this is so boring. They might choose the opera over it. Have you seen what comic/graphic books can do with teaching history? I had not until I read Trina Robbinsí Lily Renee, Escape Artist:From Holocaust Survivor to Comic Book Pioneer.

This is a really cool book that I canít wait for my daughter to read. It is a story of a young Jewish girl and her family who get caught in German Austria. The colorful story follows Lily from Austria to Kindertransport to England and all the way to America. She faces danger, death, arrest, hard labor, and the vicious tongue of those she used to call friend to complete strangers.

What do you get with this book?

- 100 pages
- Pages are very colorful and perfect for a kid.
- History on every page
- Attractive
- Exciting pictures and captions
- German to English glossary
- Appendixes explaining differences in war terms and cultures, rulers, and places. These are great for a parent to read to help a child better understand what they are reading.
- Great even in digital format.

What do you not get with this book?
- Boring textbook reading
- Pages and pages of endless words that bore those that donít like to read to tears
- Too many pages. There are only 100 pages and that includes the appendixes and the cover pages.
- An expensive price

I had not read a graphic/comic book in recent years. Personally, that is just pages that are too busy. What I found that I didnít expect was how much information can be placed on one of these comic pages without having too many words and with extremely colorful graphics. Facts that I thought would be skipped because of the size and style of the book were there for the reader to learn. I found myself enjoying it.

Will I begin reading this style of book? No. But I will recommend it to anyone who does. It is great. I love any book that can take history and make it so much fun that you donít even know you are learning.
