Playing Golf in the Winter

Since the calendar says December it must be winter but here in Texas we still can play golf if you so desire. It seems the ladies of our club are not so inclined to play if it is too windy, too cold, too wet or now too close to Christmas. So who do you find on the golf course but Jane Wilmer and me. Now Jane and I go way back to the days and years of the 1970s and 80s when my husband and I only came to Mill Creek and Salado for a few months in the winter to get away from the snow and cold or Iowa.

We owned a townhouse in Mill Creek that was rented out when we were not here. This gave us a nice place to stay for several months in the winter. My husband found men to play golf with plus a few poker games as well. He seemed happy with the situation but I got bored as this was a small community so it was hard for me to find someone to play golf with. I decided to join an Art Club who met every Tuesday morning where they worked on their art projects. At that time I had given up on my art project and had taken up writing but I enjoyed the companionship of the other artists.

One day at the Art Club I happen to ask if anyone there played golf, and to my surprise they said of course Jane plays and the only reason shes here is because it is raining today. I thought here is someone I have to meet so, got her name and promised we would get together. It happed that it was time for us to return to Iowa but I was going to remember to contact Jane when we returned.

We did connect the following year and Jane would drive her golf cart over to our townhouse and pick me up and we would hit the course. It happened that she would come regardless of what the weather was and off we would go with my husband shaking his head. Of course he would drive over to the club house for coffee with the guys and a little poker. This was the beginning of Jane and my friendship that has lasted all these years. There were a few times when we played those winters that some of the greens still had ice on them and we would just putt over it.

She is now 87 and I am 86 and we still are about the only people playing the course these last few days. The first week in December I was the only person showing up for the tee times I set. The reason Jane was not there, she was on vacation in Santa Fe visiting her son. So all the others on my list had their excuses not to show up, I played a few holes by myself back to my house.

This week it was in the 40s on Monday and Jane showed up so then Wednesday it was in the 60s and drizzling but we did get in eleven holes before we headed home. We still can play the game and Jane is the competitive golfer and can really bear down when it comes to a tournament. She plays to win I guess I have not reached that level as I am out there for the fun of the game. I enjoy organizing events or planning fun golf games so that is what I love about golf. I enjoy meeting new golfers and helping them to improve and have fun while playing this great game.
