Choose a location to sit where you will be undisturbed, either indoors or outside. If outside, a garden bench is perfect. If indoors, perhaps a corner of your bedroom would work for you.
Sit upright. If on the floor sit on a cushion with your back straight and legs folded in. If sitting on a chair, keep your back erect and plant the soles of your feet firmly on the floor for balance. Either sitting on the floor or a chair, fold your hands in your lap, or place them palms up or palms down on your thighs.
Close your eyes and begin even and regular breathing, such as one count to inhale and one count to exhale. Continue this rhythmic pattern throughout your meditation without actually saying the counts. Do not hold your breath at any time. Breathing is a tie between body, mind, emotions. If you are feeling upset, controlled breathing calms your thoughts and emotions.
Now think about your mother. Send her thoughts of loving care. Let the warmth you feel in these thoughts permeate your mind and emotions. In this way she can be with you as a comfort.
Decide to dedicate one deed to your mother each day, this helps keep your mind on a positive track thinking about her.
Spend a few minutes following the pattern of your breathing.
To finish your meditation, take a deep breath in and slowly exhale. Open your eyes. Stretch out and enjoy the lighter feeling in mind, emotions, body, that meditation imparts. Then read this poem / prayer with your mother in mind:
Prayer in a Mother's Memory
"Who but I to keep alive
The poetry of mother's life
The moments crowded into days
Each shone bright in different ways.
From childhood on, her life accrued
And fueled thoughts, events anew
That disappeared too soon in time.
Now shining brightly from above
Upon those seeded with her love
Each generation sparkling light
Destiny forever bright."
