Five Important Steps to Prevent Colds

Winter is the peak cold and flu season. Don't let a cold hit you this season. Instead, try preventive body care measures to keep healthy. Here are five important steps to prevent catching a cold this winter.

Wash Hands
Germs are spread through touch. Someone with a cold picks up a glass or touches a keyboard. Another person touches that same object. Voila germ city. According to The Center For Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC) people should develop a healthy hand washing habit to prevent spreading germs. This is especially important during the cold and flu season. In fact, hand washing is a very effective way to stay germ free. Simply use soap and water and lather up!

Hand Sanitizer
Hand sanitizers are a good alternative in circumstances where soap and water is not available. Hand sanitizers with an alcohol base are the best. Hand sanitizers with herbal ingredients are also good choices. Note: don't rely on hand sanitizers to keep completely germ free. Soap and water remain the best way to keep hands clean.

So, you think that a healthy vitamin C supplement or foods rich in vitamin C help prevent colds? Well. . . yes and no. Studies show that taking vitamin C helped to reduce cold symptoms, but it did not prevent getting a cold. Eating a diet that is rich in healthy fruits and vegetables like oranges, strawberries, spinach, and broccoli is enough vitamin C for most people. Taking a recommended dose of vitamin C, in supplement form, is also a good alternative.

People sneeze and instinctively cover their mouth with their hands. This is a common way that cold germs are spread. Instead, carry tissues during the cold season. Grab a tissue when the urge to sneeze strikes.

Get Rest
Researchers discovered that sleep deprived individuals are more susceptible to colds. Adequate sleep and rest boost the immune system and helps fight colds and viruses. Take s short break during the day and relax. Try to get an adequate amount of sleep each night.
