Gail Gibbons’ Cowboys and Cowgirls Yippee-Yay! is for children interested in American west cowboys and cowgirls. In the book, she describes details of the cowboys and cowgirls’ western life. In the first part of the picture book, she writes of the cowboys and cowgirls of the Old American West and their daily life. In the second part, she tells of the modern ranchers and the changes between the two eras.
Color illustrations depict the traditional cowboy and cowgirl gear. Gail Gibbons tells the importance of each article of clothing. Why is the saddle so important to the ranch worker? She explains simply, no saddle, no work. And on she goes to explain the different parts of the saddle.
In Cowboys and Cowgirls Yippee-Yay! children travel along with the cowboys and cowgirls on a trail drive. We meet the trail boss, drivers, wrangler and cookie. The responsibility of each person on the drive is explained. What happens at the end of the drive? Why the town sheriff is so important?
At the end of Cowboys and Cowgirls Yippee-Yay!, Gail Gibbons tells children about six real cowboys and cowgirls. There is a mix of men and women. The last page, gives Old Western fun facts: terms, lingo and slang.
Cowboys and Cowgirls Yippee-Yay! contains a lot of information about horses, ranching, rodeo and roundup, yet Ms. Gibbons shares it in a fun way. The young reader will come away from the picture book knowledgeable of these special men and women.
