Whiskers & Rhymes -

Whiskers & Rhymes is a collection of nursery rhymes written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel. The picture book contains thirty-five original poems. The short humorous nursery rhymes are perfect for infants and toddlers.

Whiskers are part of the picture bookís title. This is because the characters are cats. Cats are everywhere in the picture book doing everything. In the nursery rhyme, Pickle Paste, a cat brushes his teeth with what else, pickle paste. The paste leaves the kitty with clean, but green teeth.

In another nursery rhyme, Books to Ceiling, there is a cat with a stack of books. The stack is as high as the ceiling. The catís short poem tells of his love for books. There are more nursery rhymes which tell of other everyday objects or situations. For example, there is one about the postman.

Whiskers & Rhymes, by award winning Arnold Lobel, allows kids to develop their listening and memory skills. The nursery rhymes are easy to remember and recite. The nursery rhymes will appeal to young children.

The illustrations are characteristic of Arnold Lobelís artwork. His paint and ink drawing are very detailed. The faces of the cats portray their feelings. Arnold Lobel dresses the felines in 19th century costume. Children will delight in the period clothing. Click on Amazon.com and look at the picture book cover for an example of his work.

Six-year-old and younger children will love the collection of nursery rhymes. The rhymes and the cats are amusing. The verse is short and easy to remember. Warning to parents and teachers, children will love to repeatedly hear the rhymes.

If you have children, who do not like to brush their teeth, buy a tube of green gel toothpaste. Say with the child the Pickle Paste nursery rhyme while preparing the toothbrush for brushing. After the teeth brushing, engage the child in a conversation about the experience. Allow them to express and describe their feelings and ideas about teeth brushing. You may find the reason they are reluctant to brush their teeth. Hopefully, a recitation of the nursery rhyme will make the activity fun. (Those who do not have Whiskers & Rhymes create a silly rhyme. Any silly poem to entice kids to brush their teeth is fine.)

A healthy body is as important as a healthy mind.
