Sugar Free Apple Pie Recipe

Apple pie is definitely more healthy for you than chocolate cake or candy! Here's a sugar free variety which will help keep it even more healthy. The cinnamon and nutmeg both are shown to have healthy benefits, and as they say, an apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Note that this is MUCH better than traditional apple pie as far as it being healthy for you - but it is still not zero carb. There are a ton of natural sugars in apples. So this isn't great for someone trying to lose a lot of weight, but it's a perfect treat for someone on maintenance.

3/4 cup water
1 Tbsp cornstarch
1/4 cup cold water
1 Tbsp butter
20 packets Splenda
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
4 apples
2 9-inch pie shells

Start out by heating the oven up to 350F. While that's happening, get a small saucepan. Boil the water. Mix together the cornstarch and cold water in a glass, then mix this into the boiling water. Stir this constantly on low heat for 2 minutes, then take it off the heat.

Melt the butter slightly and blend it and the Splenda in to the pot that just came off the heat, with the cornstarch and water. Add in the two spices.

Peel the apples, then take out their cores and dice them into bite-sized pieces. Put these into a bowl. Pour the mixture of cornstarch and spices over the apples and mix thoroughly.

Lay one pie shell down into a metal pie pan. Put the fruit into this shell, then cover with the second pie shell. Crimp the edges of the pie shut. Cut a few vents into the top shell to let steam escape. Feel free to use pretty designs here!

Now bake for 45 minutes. Let cool, and enjoy!

I definitely understand apples are a harvest time treat, and that many families love going apple picking together. Like I said, apples are certainly not junk food and are far better than most other desserts! Still, if you are trying to lose weight, it is key to remember the natural sugars they have in them. Enjoy a slice as a special treat - but don't eat entire pies every day, even if they are no sugar added :)
