Create a Fall or Holiday Event Flyer

You can add your own unique creativity to your organization's flyer to announce your upcoming event using MS Word to create your flyer. Once completed, print it and take your results to any copy center with a color copier to produce the number of flyers you need. The results will by unique and less costly then using a commercial printer to do the job for you. See Sample Picture

To start you need to select a fall or holiday picture for the background edging of your flyer. The picture should contain multiple repetitive images. Look for one that is not too cluttered or too dense. Some ideas might include fall leaves, pumpkins, cornacopia, snowmen, xmas trees, angels etc. Once you have found an appropriate picture, save it to your hard drive so that you can bring it into your word document.

Open a new word document and change all of the margins to a .5 setting:
• File | Page Set-up
• Set the left, right, top and bottom margins to .5
• Click on OK

Bring your picture into the document:
• Insert | Picture | From File
• Browse to where you stored the picture you want to use and select it
• Click on Insert

Resize your picture to fill up the entire frame of the document. Use the ruler to determine where your margins are. Use the sizing handles that surround your picture object when you click on it to stretch the picture. Click on the sizing handle, hold down the mouse key and drag to fit.

Overlay a text box on the picture:
• Make sure the inserted picture is not active (will not have the resizing handles around it)
• Using the Drawing toolbar, click on the text box tool – (eighth tool on the standard draw toolbar)
• Using the sizing handles of the text box stretch it out to overlay the picture with approximately a 1 to 2 inch border of the picture around the text box.

Format the Text Box:
• Right click on the border of the text box and select Format from the shortcut menu
• Select a complementary fill color and set the transparency to 20%
• Select no line from the Line Color drop down
• Click on OK to close the format dialog box
Type your Message:
• Place you cursor inside the text box
• Center your text within the text box
• Use a large font size for the Header to get attention (i.e, 28 or 36)
• Use a slightly smaller text size for the body of the flyer
• Type your message
• Chose complementary font colors and a font types you like and apply to your text message. You can vary these for dramatic effect but don't overdue. Try to make it dramatic without being overpowering or gaudy.

Now that you've created your document. Print it and take it to a copy center to make the number of copies you need to distribute.
