Critter has some misadventures at the beach. He tries to set up the beach umbrella. The wind blows him and the umbrella away. Later, Critter drops the hot dogs in the sand, but a little water solves the problem. Critter is unable to inflate his plastic seahorse.
The grandma saves the day as only a grandmother can. She helps Critter to inflate the seahorse. It is she who takes him out into the water and holds him as he snorkels. Grandma consoles Critter when a wave of water washes the sand castle away and he drops the hot dogs in the sand.
Grandma is there to love and guide Critter through the mishaps. Also, she is there to join in the fun. The pair has a glorious day of flying kites, burying grandma in the sand and tickling her toes.
Grandma is the one who watches over Critter as he sleeps on the return trip home. She is the one who carries the sleeping kid into the house. Critter sleeps deeply knowing his grandma loves and protects him.
Mercer Mayer in Just Grandma and Me conveys the love and friendship between a grandparent and a grandchild. Their time spent alone together is beautiful and special. The picture book is good to read with grandmother, especially on Mother’s Day or Grandparents’ Day.
Mother’s Day is the second Sunday in May. Grandparent’s Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. The two days are set aside to appreciate the wisdom and heritage from these special people in children's lives. And, the most important of all, the days are for the bond and love between the two.
