In school pupils do science investigations and science projects as part of their learning. It can be fun. But learning how to experiment, research and present results are also useful skills - it isn't just for science fairs.
Since these skills need to be learned, I've been searching for useful resources that both educators and pupils could use. Here is some good general guidance for you and lots of ideas for astronomy and space projects.
Click on the name of any resource you'd like to look at.
Science Fair Project Resource Guide
A general guide that takes you through the stages: 1. Getting started; 2. Choosing a topic; 3. Completing the project; 4. Displaying a project. Each section has a number of useful links and it's clear what each one has to offer you.
Cool Science Projects Com
This is less comprehensive than the above Resource Guide, but it's also easier to follow. They have a section on Astronomy projects.
Dr. Shawn's 10 Easy Steps to Science Fair Success
I've included this page, as it's a good summary, but the original Dr. Shawn site up any more and none of the links work.
A Student's Guide to Keeping the Science in Your Science Project
This was produced at North Carolina A&T and is a PDF that you can download. It's a booklet explaining how to do the science in an investigation. Science teachers might find this a good general aid.
Sten Odenwald (Astronomy Cafe) Science Fair Projects
Dr Odenwald gives topic suggestions for different age groups based on the skills they should have mastered. They are ideas, not project outlines.
All Science Fair Projects - Astronomy
For each suggestion, they tell you the level of difficulty. They are starting ideas. Some of them are actually designed as classroom activities - educators might want to have a look at them from that point of view. By the way, be ready to do a lot of scrolling through ads.
Science Fair Project Ideas
Among the projects they list are The Solar System, The Moon, Pluto (still listed as a planet) and the other planets, except Neptune is missing. A link takes you to some ideas for each one and some useful resources.
Astronomy Science Fair Project Ideas
This is a good list of ideas. Some of them have links with more information.
I have looked through all of these sites and the supporting material and tried out links. The ones I tested were good, but if you find any any broken ones, please let me know.
