A friend of mine recently came to me complaining that the handmade soap she’d been using was ‘gumming up’ her glass shower doors much faster than the mass manufactured stuff she used to buy, and she was begging for a remedy.

The solution is simpler than any of us could have dreamed. Each time you clean your shower doors, tile walls and fixtures, be sure to coat them with a very light film of oil. Yep, you got it ~ oil. I learned this trick back in the day when my mother and I cleaned apartments for a living ~ you learn lots of these helpful tips when trying to turn a brutally lived-in home brand new and shiny again. We’d first wash the tiles and glass with vinegar and squares of window screen material. You’d be surprised how well those little 3 by 3 inch squares scrubbed away soap scum, hard water stains and rust ~ like a charm. Once the shower was sparkling, we’d get a regular bottle of vegetable oil, pour a bit on a clean, dry rag and run it over the tile and glass so that a thin film of oil was left. This way, when the soap begins to stick, you just wipe it away with a wet cloth and apply another thin film of oil. It’s that simple.

Cleaning the ring around the tub left by bath oils, bath bombs, melts and bubble bombs can be a pain in the rear, too. The solution to this problem is baking soda. Sprinkle dry baking soda into the dirty tub and using a wet cloth, wipe away the ring.
