Antibacterial Soap Warnings

Most manufacturers heavily promote and advertise the new antibacterial soaps. Why? They suggest that antibacterial soaps are supposedly much better at fighting germs than the plain, non bacteria soap. Researchers found that the extra money consumers spend on those highly touted antibacterial soaps is money down the drain. Antibacterial soaps are not any better than regular soap. Some recent research suggest antibacterial soaps might actually cause their users more harm than good!

Good VS Bad Bacteria

We use antibacterial soaps to kill bacteria. Many consumers think bacteria is bacteria. Right? Well, according to leading researchers there is a significant difference. Most people have good bacteria and bad bacteria. The problem is that the antibacterial soaps kill both the good and bad bacteria. Bad bacteria causes all those nasty germs we don't want to catch. Good bacteria lives on our skin, in our saliva, and in our bodies. This good bacteria arms our bodies to fight disease causing germs and protect us against common infections. The problem with antibacterial soap is that they do not differentiate between the two bacteria types.

Antibiotic Resistance

Resistance is futile? Researchers also found that antibacterial soaps that kill the good bacteria might promote antibiotic resistance. Making it harder for the body to fight illness.

What is the Best Germ Fighter?

The best way to fight germs is to keep hands clean using regular soaps like Dove. In fact, regular soap does a good job of killing off bacteria and grimy grit and germs. All one needs to remember is to wash their hands the proper way and on a regular basis.

Proper Hand Washing Techniques

Remember the kindergarten teacher who taught you proper hand washing techniques when you were five. She was right! Turn on the faucet and place hands under warm running water until they are wet. Grab a bar of regular soap and lather up. Rub hands together for at least 15 seconds. Remember to wash the back of the hands and in between the fingers and under the fingernails. Rinse hands completely. Dry hands and use a towel to turn off the running water. Remember to wash hands throughout the day. And always wash hands before every meal.

And the next time you are in the store think twice before purchasing that antibacterial soap.
