Fall turns into winter and old man winter is busily nipping at your nose and skin turning it dry and brittle. Learn how to winterize your skin throughout the cold weather season and keep it looking fabulous. The main reason our skin starts to look so harsh and brittle in the winter is because cold dry air assaults our skin constantly during the cold season. Consequently, the cold air depletes the moisture from the skin doubling the drying effects. Let' s review a few ways to winterize the skin.
Humidify. Dry Heat in the home actually intensifies dry skin problems. One way to protect our skin is to add a humidifier to the home. A humidifier is a quick way to add moisture to the air in the home and keep skin moist. Place a humidifier in the bedroom and other rooms frequented during the winter months. If you don't have a humidifier try a vaporizer. It works almost as well as a humidifier. Even a pan of water on a hot radiator adds moisture to the air in the home quickly.
Moisturize. Summer isn't the only time to concentrate on heavily moisturizing the skin. Harsh winter air robs the skin of moisture. This causes skin to turn rough, dry, cracked and scaly. Always moisturize the skin regularly during winter months. Moisturize after a bath or shower. Continue adding body lotions and creams to skin throughout the day and at night just before going to bed. Use a thick body lotion or cream like Nivea Body Creme because they are better at sealing in skin moisture.
Avoid Harsh Soaps. Harsh soaps and cleansers rob the skin of moisture. Use a soap product like Dove or Basis with emollients that add moisture to the skin is a perfect solution.
Dress Appropriately. Dress in layers. Dressing in heavy tight fitting clothing often irritates and drys out the skin. Wear loose fitting layered clothing. Wearing clothing in layers allows you to remove clothing if you start to feel hot and leads to less skin irritation. And don't forget the gloves when you are outside. Gloves protect the skin from dryness, wind burns, cold, frost bites. If you must go without gloves slather on a few layers of thick creamy moisturizers to protect the skin.
Sunscreens. Dermatologists recommend using a heavy duty sunscreen before going out in the winter time. Use at least an SPF 30. Slather the sunscreen on all exposed skin. This step helps protect the skin from the harsh outdoor winter air and harsh wintry sunlight.
