Discovering Pilates

Pilates has been around for a long time. But the first experience I had with Pilates was while turning the channel on my television in the early morning hours. On the television screen was Susan Lucci and a collection of celebrities demonstrating what they called the Malibu Pilate Chair Workout.They discussed how Pilates was the only exercise method that whipped them back into shape fast. So, this really got my immediate attention. The Pilates method in general truly intrigued me and surely was worth researching its origins.

It is interesting to note that Pilates was used by many actors, dancers, sports figures. Why? Pilates is a proven way to reshape the body and muscles. The movements are very fluid and practioners move from one exercise to the other with grace. It is easy to see why many enjoy the Pilate method of getting in
shape and gaining strength and flexibility.

Pilates Background

The Pilate method was invented by Joseph Pilate. Born in German in 1880. He was a physical trainer who experimented with various methods which included yoga, gymnastics, skiing, and self defense, dance weight training, circuit training. He moved to England where he furthered his studies. He developed a well known fitness program to rehabilitate patients while in England. Later on in life he and his wife started a Pilates studio in New York City which attracted many dancers and actors.

Relieves stress. Many practitioners say that the breathing methods used in Pilates helps the body and mind to relax.

Low Impact. Exercises do not place a lot of stress on the body. Consequently, less chances of injury to the body.

Heals. Many athletes and dancers use the Pilate method to heal injuries and get back into shape.

Breathing. Teaches lateral breathing which is an effective way to control the breath.

Concentration. Teaches how to maintain concentration on movements.

Control. Teaches mastering body movements.

Flow. Movements should flow easily.

Flexibility. Practice increases flexibility.

Precision. Small precise movements to get maximum results.
