Wesak, also called Vesak and celebrated in the Tibetan traditions as Saka Dawa day, celebrates the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha. Wesak is celebrated during the full moon in May except during a leap year when it is celebrated during the full moon of June.
Create a Bodhi Tree
The Buddha reached enlightenment sitting under a bodhi tree
You will need:
-Empty paper towel roll
-Green construction paper
-Brown Construction paper
-Bodhi leaf template
-Glue and/or tape
Cover the paper towel roll with brown construction paper to make the tree trunk.
Click here to print the template for the bodhi leaf. Cut out the bodhi leaf and using it as a template to trace cut out 6-8 leaves on the green construction paper. Glue or tape the stems around the top of your tree trunk.
You can cut out this picture of the Buddha and glue it to the bottom of the trunk.
The lotus flower symbolizes purity.
You will need:
-7 pipe cleaners for the flower petals
To make your flower petals twist all but one of the pipe cleaners you want for your flower petals into a figure 8 shape. Arrange the shaped pipe cleaners so the petals are in a circular shape and wrap the last pipe cleaner around them to hold the petals together. Lift and pull together four petals for the center of your flower. Adjust the bottom petals and you have a lotus flower
Here is a lotus flower coloring sheet you can print and enjoy coloring.
You will need:
-Hot glue gun with glue sticks
-Piece of card board
-Paper (I used white tissue paper)
This is traditionally done using bamboo. However, I chose to use popsicle sticks because they are easily available and inexpensive. I have directions for making a basic lantern because it is the simplest to explain and make. You can create lanterns with more elaborate designs.
Make two squares and eight triangles out of the popsicle sticks by glueing the ends together to create the proper shape. You will need to flat sides of the popsicle sticks to be the outside of your shapes.
Lay one square flat and put a small dab of glue on each corner Then glue the triangles, tip down onto the corner of the square.
You will want to angle the triangles so that the corners are touching and the bottoms make a square. Glue the edges of the triangles together and set aside. Repeat with the remaining square and triangles.
You will find that one square will have a flat side and the other will have a narrow edge. I opted to glue the flat square sides together.
Decide which end is the bottom and cut out a piece of cardboard to fit inside. You will want to glue it to the popsicle sticks, making sure that it is strong enough to hold the candle.
Now you want to cover your lantern with paper. Because of the shape you can put glue on one side of your frame and gently roll it over the paper pressing the paper into the glue.
Or you can measure and cut out pieces of paper and glue them on each side. This takes more patience and time but it does allow for greater creative expression.
