Synthetic Ingredients in Modern Perfumes

The scent of a good perfume is an important part of getting ready for the day, and many people won't leave the house without using a product to improve their smell. Many years ago, perfumes were developed to help cover up the foul odors that were the result of infrequent bathing habits. Before running water became available, it was more difficult for people to bathe, so they did it less frequently and used perfume to cover up their body scent.

In our modern world, showers are now so easily accessible, which means that most people don't necessarily need a perfume to cover up a foul smell. But, people enjoy using perfumes to enhance their smell. Often, a perfume can enhance your mood, and it can also impact the other people that are close enough to smell it.

Synthetic Ingredients: The Problem With Modern Perfume

Since perfume and cologne is so popular, there are a variety of scents to choose from. The problem is that many of these products are developed in massive quantities, and it is much cheaper to make the perfume with synthetic ingredients. In the lab, the scents are developed in an artificial way, in order to mimic the scents that can be found in nature.

This process is much cheaper than harvesting the natural scent, and it is easier for the manufacturers to do. Also, some people like the synthetic scents more, because they have found that the smell might linger for a longer period of time, compared with a natural scent.

The problem with these imitation perfume scents is the fact that they are made with toxic chemical ingredients. Some of the ingredients including: d-limonene, ethanol, and formaldehyde, can cause health problems. It is becoming more common for people to have a negative reaction to synthetic perfumes, and the health results may include headaches, allergy symptoms, breathing problems, and/or irritation of the throat, nose, and eyes.

When these chemical ingredients come in contact with your skin, or when you breathe them in, they are absorbed into your body. The contact will allow those chemicals to enter your bloodstream, either by direct contact to your skin or if the skin comes in contact with clothing that contains fragrances. Additionally, those chemicals can enter the body through your nose, when you smell the scent.

The absorption of synthetic chemicals in your body results in a negative reaction. Even if you feel fine, the chemicals are placing a burden on your kidneys and liver, as those detoxifying organs work to remove the chemicals from your body. Many perfume ingredients are derived from petroleum, and there are many negative health effects that can result from petroleum based products. The symptoms might not show up immediately, but over time these chemicals can take a toll on your health.

So, the next time you pick up a bottle of perfume, ask yourself what might be in it and will it be worth the purchase.

Until next time ...
