Purim celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people from destruction.
An evil advisor to King Ahasuerus called, Haman, plotted to destroy the Jewish people by convincing the king that it would be best to annihilate them. The Queen, Esther, who was Jewish convinced King Ahasuerus to spare here and her people, thus saving the Jewish people from complete annihilation.
Today people make noise with the Graggers whenever Hamanís name is mentioned. People also gives gifts to the poor and food to friends and family.
When it comes to graggers the louder the better! So how do you make a really loud gragger? Try these.
Ages 3 and up
You will need:
-Empty tissue box that has a hole only in the top
-Metal clasping rings similar to the ones used as key chains. You can get a dozen for less then a dollar at a craft store
-Piece of card board
I was surprised that this was the loudest of the two.
To construct this gragger all you need to do is Put the metal rings inside the tissue box. Cover the hole with a piece of card board. Cover the box with the construction paper and decorate
Ages 4 and up
You will need:
-Empty soda bottle
-Bells or dry beans
-Empty toilet paper roll
My son has informed me that bells are louder so I have included them here. You can get a package of bells at you local crafts store. I recommend using larger bells (just make sure they can fit into the bottle). We used three different sized bells, 6mm, 9mm and 14mm. If you wish to use larger bells Iíd recommend using a 1-liter bottle because the opening is slightly larger then on a 20 ounce bottle.
Bells or beans the directions or the same.
-Clean and dry your soda bottle
-Add your beans or bells to the bottle. I had my 3-year old use a spoon to pour in the beans.
-Screw on the cap
-Slide the empty toilet paper roll over the cap of the bottle, tape to hold as in the picture to the left. I highly recommend cutting the roll in half. The toilet paper roll is not very strong and the father away from the bottle the weaker it is.
-Cover with construction paper and decorate.
For the dougg you will need:
-1/4 cup of whole wheat flour
-3 teaspoons butter or margarine
-Ĺ cup of whole milk
-1/4 cup of sugar
-Pinch of salt
Preserves are used instead of jams or jelly because the jams and jelly arenít thick enough and tend to run out, while the preserves puff up when you cook them. The traditional fillings are poppy seeds, dates, prunes and apricots. If you have these you can use them but you do not have to. I have even used a bit of left over cookie dough.
-1Ĺ cup strawberry preserves
-3/4 cup chopped walnuts
-1 cup Apricot preserves
-1 cup chopped, dried apricots
-Preheat over to 375
-In a large bowl cut your butter into the flour
-Add the sugar and the salt mixing well
-Beat the egg and add it to the dough, mixing well
-Next slowly add in your milk while stirring.
-Once you have stirred in your milk, flour a counter top or flat surface.
-Knead the dough for 10 minutes.
-Let rest for 10 minutes.
-While the dough rests mix the filling ingredients (whichever you choose to use)
-Spread the dough out with your hand until it is less then 1/4 of an inch in thickness.
-To make the circles I used a 3Ĺ inch cookie cutter circle. You want the circles to be no less then 3 inches and no more the 4 inches in diameter and place on cookie sheet.
-Add a tablespoon of filling to the center of the cookie. Fold the sides up and in to make a triangle. You want to see the filling so make sure you do not completely cover the filling. Pinch the corners so your filling does not leak out.
-Bake at 375 for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
