The new laws in Ukraine that prohibit singles from adopting has left many women broken hearted. Some had already known who their new children would be and fallen in love with their sweet faces. This unfortunate and sudden change in their international adoption laws will leave many special needs children with no family. They will soon age out of the baby houses and be sent to mental institutions where the mortality rate is unbelievably high.
While it is all to easy to dwell on this injustice I will instead chose to focus on what can be done elsewhere as this door closes for many people. There are still many options out there for single women (and men) who are looking to open their homes and hearts to a special little one.
• Estonia excepts not only single women but also single men and there is also no stated age limit. This country does require two trips but you will receive a referral before you travel that will include pictures, medicals, and usually a video of your new little one. Those who have read my previous articles know my heart is with the special needs angels out there, and I can tell you there are some amazing little ones who are just waiting for the right family.
• Another option is Latvia this however will require a total of three trips which can get expensive. This also has a pre-referral program, and you can adopt unrelated children. There are several “genetically enhanced” (Down syndrome) waiting in this country along with other “typical” angels.
• The Republic of Georgia is another option, you will make two trips and you can get a referral before you travel here also. Again multiple unrelated children can be adopted. This is a relatively quick process and the trips are shorter than most.
A few other options that are available for a single mom of course include Domestic adoption (always a great option, and generally affordable if your open to an older or special needs child), Vietnam, Moldova, Russia, Peru, Liberia, and many many more. There are still countless options out there for you single moms, and so many sweet little ones who are just waiting for someone to call mom! I encourage all you single moms (and married couples) to check out reecesrainbow.com to explore and get valuable information about special needs adoption. Yes I mention this a lot, but what can I say it has touched my heart.
