Sharon M. Draper writes the Shadows of Caesar’s Creek. Ziggy, Rashawn, Jerome and Rico are best friends and in the Black Dinosaurs club. They go on an overnight camping trip to Caesar’s Creek State Park. The boys learn the park is named after an ex-slave who later became a Shawnee chief.

The camp counselor is a descendant of Caesar. She informs the young campers of Shawnee traditions. One of the traditions is the rite of manhood ceremonies. Ziggy and his Black Dinosaurs club members’ imaginations go into overdrive. It is overdrive with a capital O! They find a canoe. After the other campers are fast asleep, the four boys take the canoe out on the lake. The Black Dinosaurs imagine themselves as young Shawnee braves accomplishing their manhood tests.

Unfortunately, the boys leave the oars on the shore. They soon find themselves far from the shore. The bright moon is the only thing to guide them to safety, but which way is safety? Most importantly, with no oars, how do they get there?

Sharon M. Draper writes another adventure book with the four likable urban African-American boys. Ziggy and the Black Dinosaurs are a popular educational and adventure series. Ziggy and his friends have all sorts of adventures which keeps the reader’s interest until the last page. Ms. Draper interjects Shadows of Caesar’s Creek with educational facts without slowing the book’s action.

Ms. Draper is a teacher. She has a study guide in the back of the book. There are ten discussion topics for each chapter. Things to do are listed. Sharon M. Draper has a list of web sites and books for additional information about state parks, Shawnee Indians and other related subjects.
