Wrinkled dimpled skin on the hips, buttocks, thighs and arms is often referred to as cellulite. But... we know what it really is..don't we? Cellulite is a highly technical and medical term for FAT. Indeed, cellulite refers to those fat deposits under the skin giving that uneven flabby texture to the skin.
What Causes Cellulite
Medical Researchers found cellulite is typically a female problem. And caused by increased estrogen levels in the female body. Female estrogen levels are at their highest points during pregnancy. So, along with baby weight is excess cellulite. And to top it off... even thin women are more prone to cellulite than the average man. Once again due to the estrogen levels in the female body. And of course, eating foods high in saturated fat only adds to the cellulite problem.
Moisturizing potions, lotions, creams, oils, massage, hydrotherapy, are all used in the cellulite wars. The basic aim of all these methods is to smooth the skin and lessen the appearance of the cellulite. There are several popular products on the market claiming to cure cellulite. Here are a few methods many women found very effective.
Creams. One of the most prevalent methods is to use a moisturizing cream rich with antioxidants A, C, E. Anti oxidants are known to fight free radical damage to the body. Free radical damage causes aging, wrinkles, and other skin problems. The moisturizing cream is typically massaged into the skin to increase circulation to the area and produce drainage from the skin cells in the region. This supposedly results in smoother skin.
Essential Oils. Moisturizing the skin with essential oils like Grapefruit is thought to increase skin circulation and lead to removing excess water in the area which results in smoother skin similar to results with moisturizing creams.
Hydrotherapy. This is a water method used to cleanse and detoxify the skin. These methods include everything from taking a hot sauna to steam baths. These methods are thought to increase circulation and sweat out the toxins in the body. This results in smoother skin.
Herbal Treatments. Herbal methods are not recognized by the medical community but many people with cellulite claim various herbal treatments or wraps work wonders.
Exercise & Dieting. Developing an exercise program and cutting back on highly saturated fats will lessen the amount of cellulite in the body if followed on a regular basis. Get moving and walk for 20 or 30 minutes a day. Incorporate a few lunges, squats, and stretching exercises. Lifting weights is thought to lift
and tighten the skin. Vigorous aerobic exercise also works off cellulite deposits. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Drink lots of water to wash toxins out of the body.
Roller Massage. A deep massage is applied to the area using rollers and suction cups which increase circulation in the affected area. This deep massage method allegedly destroys those fatty cell deposits. One drawback, researchers found this method was only a temporary fix.
Cellulite is a prevalent problem among women 35 and over. Although cellulite is typically not a health issue it is often a cosmetic issue affecting a woman's body image and inner well being. And consequently should be taken seriously by those in the healthcare profession.
