Roundup your little doggies with these rip-roaring reads!
Saddle up with a bag of ideas right out of the Wild West. These activities are sure to be fun for any young cowpoke.
Wanted: Out-of-the-Ordinary Outlaws
Say "howdy" to a display that spotlights every reader. Have readers describe themselves physically and their interests using a large index card. They can head it with a great name ("Ponderosa Paula"). Using construction paper make "Wanted" posters. Highlight different posters each week on a bulletin board. Punch holes in the rest and put them in a binder for everyone to peruse. Decorate the bulletin board with a sheriff and rope.
Book Bandit
Take the boring out of book reports. Tell students that Overdue Otis just climbed through the window to steal their library books so no one else can read them. Their jobs are to prove that the book is worth sharing with others. They must convince him in their reports not to steal the book by telling him about the scenes they most enjoyed. Make a binder of reports called, "Otis' Outstanding Books!" Students can refer to it next time they are looking for a good book.
Rustlers' Reading
Try these great books for your next reading drive:
- Holes. What roundup would be complete without Kissing Kate Barlow?
- Riddle Roundup: A Wild Bunch to Beef Up Your Word Power. Sixty-two rowdy riddles will tickle the funny bone as they introduce young readers to new words and encourage them to use words they already know in different ways.

- Cowboys: Roundup on an American Ranch. For a firsthand look at life on a working ranch this is the perfect photo-essay.
- Why Cowboys Sleep With Their Boots On. Young cowpokes everywhere will take a shine to this rib-ticklin' tale of Slim Jim Watkins and his vanishing wardrobe.
- I Want to Be a Cowboy. Step-by-step details of this occupation by a famous cowboy.
An alternative idea is to feature snake books in a Rattle Snake Round Up.
