I am neither a psychologist nor a scientist yet the inner workings of the human brain have always fascinated me. Are we overloading our brain with too much too fast? The Overflowing Brain is an interesting read for those of us fascinated by self-development.
The mind is such an important aspect of developing who we are as a well-rounded person. Learning more about the workings of our brain means learning more about what makes us “tick” and maybe even develop an insight into why we do some of the things we do. All and all, I thought The Overflowing Brain - Information Overload and the Limits of Working Memory by Torkel Klingberg was well written and can certainly be appreciated by students, professionals and even someone like me - the layperson. As a layperson, some pages were a bit over my head but generally it was a good read.
The examples were clearly written and eye opening. I thought it brought science down-to-earth. This book brings home the fact that we are living in a fast paced hectic world and it is taking a toll on your mental ability to function effectively. Talking on the phone while driving, trying to concentrate in a distracting and loud work environment, listening to TV while trying to do other things just cannot be done with 100% of our concentration. It's been labeled ADT - Attention Deficit Trait
Here are a few examples:
1. People who drive while performing a mentally demanding task have a reaction time that is up to 1 1/2 seconds slower. Listening to radio or audio books don't have a negative effect on concentration. It's when you add a cell phone that reaction time goes down.
2. There seems to be something inherent in us that seeks out stimulation. That's why computer games and even television programs are becoming more complex.
3. New findings in psychology and brain research suggest that the difficulties we find with simultaneous performance and distractions converge onto one central limitation: the ability to retain information. When you try to do too much, you end up losing information, which then affects memory.
These examples are just the tip of the scientific iceberg. Whether you're a student of psychology or a student of self-development, you'll find something of interest in this book. You do though have to enjoy learning about the power of the human brain/mind.
If you looking to learn more about how the fast paced world is affecting our ability to think straight and remember, then this is a book you'll want to read.
