Writing your personal and professional mission statement is invaluable to setting and achieving goals. A well thought out mission statement can provide clarity, focus and direction to your life. When you truly have an understanding of what is important in life, life takes on more importance.
A mission statement is a brief statement of purpose. American Heritage Dictionary defines purpose as: “The object toward which one strives or for which something exists; an aim or a goal.”
What motivates you to live life to the fullest? What gets you excited about life? When your feet hit the floor first thing in the morning, what excites you enough to say, “I love my life because today I _________?”
A well-defined mission statement:
~ A mission statement is short, specific and meaningful. A well-written mission statement is usually a paragraph or less long.
~ A mission statement focuses on how you plan to use your time and energy to live your life in meaningful and purposeful ways.
~ A mission statement focuses on how you will be using your values and beliefs to improve your own world and add value to the lives of others.
~ A mission statement is a foundation for the goals you’ll be setting personally and professionally.
~ A mission statement is motivating, proactive and empowering.
There is no magical formula to writing a mission statement other than it should be in the present tense about your values and beliefs and touch upon what you strive to achieve with your life. As your life evolves and changes, so will your mission statement.
A mission statement isn’t written in a minute. It takes time and soul-searching. Think of it has an emotional and physical blueprint for how you want to spend your time and energy living your life. It is like a compass pointing in the right direction so you can sit down and write powerful, meaningful and achievable goals.
Example of a personal mission statement:
I, Sharon Michaels, treasure above all else my ability to stick with a task until it is finished and stay positive even in negative situations and these abilities will support me in achieving my personal and professional goals and living my life as a role model for my children.
Have you written your personal mission statement? Is it time?
