Pumpkin Dictionaries

Work on dictionary skills with this great fall activity.

Stretch dictionary skills with this seasonal skill. Create a pumpkin, cauldron, or haunted house outline, or you can use a coloring sheet available from Heartland or RaisingOurKids.com.

Create strips of paper with adjectives (sample list below), place them in a trick-or-treat bag. Each student pulls an adjective from the bag. The words are to be kept secret. They then look up the words in dictionaries and read the definition. Then using crayons they are to decorate their pumpkins with designs and pictures that will convey the words' meanings. Conclude by having the students take turns guessing the adjective that each pumpkin represents.
