Over Forty - Curly

Guest Author - Lynne Chapman

Mature women, such as those who are over forty, are beginning to make the decision as to what is stylish for them instead of looking to fashion magazines.

In our younger years, we curly haired women often spent a lot of time fighting the natural waves and kinks in our hair. We had been taught by fashion magazines and television that good looking hair must be sleek and smooth. So we spent hours straightening out curls and waves and smoothing any hint of frizz. Now at age forty and beyond, we are starting to embrace the unruly texture of our hair. Maybe it is our more mature sense of self or the more relaxed world we live in, but many are finding that it is acceptable and even fashionable to allow our curls to go the way they will.

The easiest way to give up the perpetual straightening fight and to glory in our natural curl is to get a good hair cut. Find a hairdresser who is proficient in trimming and styling curly hair. You will want a shaping that agrees with your own individual curl.

In the following picture, fine, curly hair is trimmed into this controlled fluffy style. The model prefers to use a curling iron to direct her curls since her fine hair is curlier than she is comfortable with. She does not, however, attempt a style that is designed for straight hair.

The style can be updated by trimming the nape section shorter, leaving fringy pieces that hug the neck or by allowing the hair just above the nape area to grow longer and fuller.

Our model always uses shampoo and conditioner designed for fine hair so that each hair feels a bit heavier. She then applies Nioxin Texture Cream to give both frizz control and body. She uses a light smoothing serum on very humid days to protect her hair from frizzing due to the excess dampness in the air.

She dries her hair with a medium sized round brush and perfects the style with a curling iron. After tucking the sides behind her ears, she finishes her style with a flexible hold hair spray. Nioxinís Fast Finish aerosol hair spray is perfect for this. It holds the style, helps to keep out humidity and brushes out easily at the end of the day.
