The Geometry of Sisters Review

This self development book review is on ‘The Geometry of Sisters’ by Luanne Rice, a novel about the powerful bonds between several pairs of sisters.

The story starts off quite slow and does not seem to head anywhere in particular. In essence, after the death of her husband and the disappearance of her daughter (Carrie), Maura returns home with her other daughter (Beck) after being away for nearly two decades. Whilst rebuilding her life and continuing to search for Carrie, Maura reconnects with her sister (Katharine).

There are two other sets of sisters in the novel, one being a pair of sisters from the past who are presumed to be ghosts. As the story unravels, you discover that there is a ‘geometry’ that connects the various pairs of sisters.

The book is 382 pages long. About a quarter of the way through, family secrets that have been buried deep begin to emerge. Also, you begin to hear different versions of these secrets from the various characters. The introduction of these view points starts to create more interest with the final 50 pages or so being the most intriguing.

‘The Geometry of Sisters’ - Self development issues

The focus of the book is on family relationships, in particular, on the unique bonds between sisters, however near or far they are. The following sentence from the novel describes this in a nutshell:

“...if I were within a certain distance from my sister, our DNA would start vibrating. We’d be like tuning forks, responding to each other.”

The novel also touches on ‘truth’ - the fact that the truth is always there however much one tries to cover it up. In this vein ‘The Geometry of Sisters’ is about a self development search to find the truth and missing pieces in the puzzle of the characters’ lives. Other self or personal development issues covered include:

* the power of family ties
* love and guilt and their effect on families
* coping with the death of family members
* betrayals and the repair of shattered lives
* loneliness, despair and coping mechanisms
* the importance of making peace with the past
* dealing with broken hearts and worlds falling apart
* family tragedies and how people try to compensate
* family secrets and how they affect close and distant family members
* the importance of making peace with the past and accepting new lives

‘The Geometry of Sisters’ - Summary

Overall, ‘The Geometry of Sisters’ did not hold my interest in the way I was expecting. However, in writing this self development book review I was reminded of the special relationship and deep love that exists between sisters - a unique and very strong bond that holds fast through the trials and tribulations of life.
