The Right Packaging makes all the Difference Your auction is successfully over now it is time to roll your sleeves up and start the next chore. If you have prepared well, you will have some idea of how you intend to package the item. You will have the necessary items to hand and can pack and ship with relative ease. So how do you prepare? The first thing you need to do is decide on the type of packaging. Boxes, padded envelopes, bubble wrap, polystyrene chips, shredded paper and packaging tape are just some of the items you may need. The packaging depends on the item being sent. Always err on the safe side and use the best quality you can afford. Items being sent by surface mail are in the postal system for a longer time than priority mail and as a result packaging may come loose or items can get thrown around. Correct packaging is a must. Wrap any breakable items in bubble wrap and then place in the centre of a strong cardboard box containing polystyrene chips or other comparable cushioning material. Rolled up newspaper is not recommended as the print can come off and make the contents look grubby. Shredded paper or packing straw are suitable alternatives. If the item is very fragile or is travelling a long way it is a good idea to double box – place the box inside another box containing more of the packing material. Ensure a snug fit so that the inner box can not move around. Cds, games etc can be posted in padded bags but be aware that they made need extra packing as the case can get broken quite easily. Books can be sent in padded envelopes but again make sure that they packets are sealed and add extra tape if necessary. Odd shaped items need more thought so organize this before you list the item so that there are no hold ups when the item sells. Where do you source packaging? · If you are buying items for resale keep the packaging as you will probably be able to reuse this. · Invest in a shredder (eBay offers some great bargains) and shred all your junk mail, used envelopes etc. · eBay sellers offer some great bargains, check out the listings but take into account the carriage costs and if you are buying in bulk, you will need somewhere to store everything. · Office supply stores often offer online discounts and will supply relatively small amounts at minimal carriage rates. · Your local supermarket or corner shop will usually be delighted to get rid of cardboard boxes and other packaging for which they would otherwise have to pay for disposal. Good quality packaging pays for itself in satisfied customers and repeat sales.
