Like so many holidays, St. Patrick's Day started as a religious holiday. In Ireland it is still mainly a religious holiday, although things are changing in the name of tourism. In the United States and the rest of the world, St. Patrick's Day is viewed as a celebration of the Irish and all things Irish.
