Hello, and welcome back! There’s been a lot of rough weather in the past couple days, here and elsewhere. I hope you’ve all made it through safely. Aside from a bit of water in the basement again, we did okay here at my house, but the best part of the storms rolling through is that the summer heat and humidity is finally gone and we’re back to more spring-like weather, which means this weekend, I can take my books outside to read again, and I’m ready to dig into the May books. But I still have some April romances to share with you all here first.
This time out, I have another from Jill Sorensen, The Edge of Night (Dell, purchased). Police officer Noah Young works the gang unit in Chula Vista, and he’s seen some really awful things. But finding the body of a young woman on a schoolyard that’s smack in the middle of a gang area might get him the opportunity to finally make the move to detective, which is something he’s wanted for a while. April Ortiz waits tables in the same area; she’s a single mom with a young daughter to raise, and if she has to wear a short skirt to do it, she will. Sharing a tip with the police about the murder, though, brings her into Noah’s orbit. Noah and April couldn’t have led different lives up to this point, but their attraction is immediate. Still, April’s past isn’t something she can reconcile with dating a police officer, and her past may just be enough to keep them apart, no matter how strong the attraction is between them. Noah needs to find this murderer before April becomes a target, but she keeps secrets that hinder both his investigation and their potential romance. Add in his young sister and her recent trauma and a budding romance with a young man from April’s past, along with a very determined killer, and this is a terrific romantic suspense. April and Noah are hot and heartbreaking, as are his sister and her young lover. I didn’t love Ms. Sorensen’s first book, but I’ve changed my mind about her since. This one’s earned four of Cupid’s five arrows.
Until next time, happy reading!
