Spanish vocabulary. Parentescos. (Relatives)
Let's talk about relatives. The list below will help you learn new vocabulary, this time about relatives (parientes). Learn to say “mother”, “father” or “niece” in Spanish.

You can find below a list of Spanish words and their English translations. Note every Spanish word is preceded by its corresponding definitive article (el / la) (the). This way you will know if the word is either masculine of feminine.

la abuela (grandmother) / el abuelo (grandfather)

la bisabuela (great-grandmother) / el bisabuelo (great-grandfather)

la bisnieta (great-granddaughter) / el bisnieto (great-grandson) / los bisnietos (boys and girls: great-grandchildren)

la cuñada (sister-in-law) / el cuñado (brother-in-law)
la hermana política (sister-in-law) / el hermano político (brother-in-law)
(Note: “cuñada” and “cuñado” are the usual terms, but “hermana política” and “hermano político” are more formal and they are not as common as “cuñada” and “cuñado”.

la hermana (sister) / el hermano (brother)
la hermanastra (stepsister) / el hermanastro (stepbrother)

la hija (dauther) / el hijo (son)
la hijastra (stepdaughter) / el hijastro (stepson)

la madre (mother) / el padre (father)
la mamá (mom) / el papá (dad)
la madrastra (stepmother) / el padrastro (stepfather)

la nuera (daughter-in-law) / el yerno (son-in-law )

la prima (cousin) / el primo (cousin)
la prima carnal / el primo carnal (first cousin)
la prima hermana / el primo hermano (first cousin)
(Note both “prima / primo carnal” and “prima hermana / primo hermano” are the same. The usual form is “prima hermana” or “primo hermano”.)

la sobrina (niece) / el sobrino (nephew)

la suegra (mother-in-law) / el suegro (father-in-law)

la tatarabuela (great-great-grandmother ) / el tatarabuelo (great-great-grandfather)
los tararabuelos (great-great grandparents)

la tataranieta (great-great-granddaughter ) / el tataranieto (great-great-grandson)
los tararanietos (great-great-grandchildren)

la tía (aunt) / el tío (uncle)

los parientes (relatives)
Note verb ser is always used with expressions containing this kind of terms.

This way, we can say:

Ana es mi hermana. (Ana is my sister.)

Juan y Pedro son hermanos. (Juan and Pedro are brothers.)
