Back-to-School and Body Piercings

Back-to-school time brings a whole different set of rules and conditions from whatever was happening during the summer and it can be a bit of a conflict for the teen who decided to get a new piercing over the summer. Some schools don't allow certain piercings (most of the facial ones) and these rules can be even more restrictive for high school athletes.

Piercings and School Dress Codes
Go to any body art site on the web and it won't take very long to find a teenager asking what to do about their new nose piercing since their school doesn't allow them. My best advice is, if it's not allowed, don't do it. That's the cheapest and easiest solution.

Despite the advertising claims of various glass or plastic jewelry to be "invisible," the only body piercings that are truly invisible are the ones that aren't really there. Plastic and glass are only invisible from larger distances, they still show up when you are standing right next to someone and looking at their face. Spending the money and healing time on a piercing only to be forced to give it up hurts more than the needle through the nose did, so it's best to just wait until you after graduation. And all the same applies to pierced lips and eyebrows.

Piercings and School Sports
There's a good reason that any sort of body piercings are often banned from school sports. One wrong move and they can be torn right out of the body. Injuries with that type of accident can range from lots of bleeding up to needing plastic surgery, so it is much safer to skip this type of mod if you are really active in school sports.

New piercings need several months to become fully healed and established. If the piercing is less than four months old, it might not be happy with the jewelry being taken in and out daily, and very new piercings can collapse shut if the jewelry is removed, so just taking the ring or stud out for team practice and games isn't always the simple option that it might seem. Unhealed piercings can also become highly irritated or even infected from contact with lots of sweat.

Some schools do allow piercings but they have to be taped down for sports. As always, make sure you know what the rules are and consider the risks before you get any mods.
