The Neptune and Mars Grapes

There are a number of wonderful disease resistant grape varieties. Here are details for the Neptune and others.

The Neptune Grape

One of the largest seedless white grapes, this is hardy to zone four. It is a fox grape type, and is related to the Thompson Seedless. Adapted to the East, it was released in 1998 by the University of Arkansas. This disease resistant plant is less vigorous than some seedless grape plants. Spacing can be less than eight feet between plants. It has moderate resistance to mildew, anthracnose, and black rot. It does well in most regions.

These are considered top quality grapes matching that of the Thompson Seedless. This table grape is resistant to cracking. They ripen mid-season in early September. These are yellow green or white, and medium sized. They have a juicy, wonderful, sweet, mild, rich, fruity flavor. The clusters are large.

Mars Grape

Bred by Dr. James N. Moore at the University of Arkansas, this is a fox grape type. It is hardy to zone four. This thrives in areas with hot summers. It is quite cold hardy for a seedless grape. This buds out late so it misses the late spring frosts. Resistant to both mildews and black rot, these are vigorous plants. This bears lots of fruit from an early age. Allow it to get well established before this is allowed to happen. It continues to bear heavy crops even with age.

These round blue grapes ripen two weeks or so before the Concord usually in August and September. These slipskin grapes are large to medium sized. They store well. They’re sweet and juicy with a flavor like that of the Concord, sweet and rich with just a hint of foxiness. The compact clusters are medium sized.

Some Other Great Disease Resistant Grape Varieties

Sweet Lace Patio grape is a very special variety. These are high quality table grapes that can also be used for wine. The fruits, which have small seeds, have a very good flavor. This is especially suitable for small gardens. It is ideally suited to containers. It is easy to train along a fence, arbor, or pergola. Sweet Lace is hardy to zone six.

Kay Gray is known as an extremely disease resistant variety. This grape is used primarily for wine. A vigorous plant, it is among the hardiest of the wine grape varieties. The small fruits are borne in large loose clusters.
