On The Go Wireless Devices

Guest Author - Debbie Jackson

There are lots of options in the wireless on the go market from tablets to netbooks. All of the devices offer different capabilities, speeds, targeted purpose and various price ranges. Just as you would review options when considering which cellular phone is right for you, you now need to review these options when considering a mobile on the go device.

Manufacturers include all major cellular service providers as well as Apple, HP and Dell. New models are being added into the market place on a rapid pace including new providers. Features to consider when researching your next purchase of an on the go mobile device include speed, included applications, ease of application downloads, battery life, camera options, screen size and weight.

Apples' iPad has a neat application called Find My iPad which will help you locate your iPad when left behind and allows you to place a contact message on the screen, includes locator map and identifying sound. Also, you can remotely set a passcode to lock your iPad preventing usage of your iPad or accessing your personal information.

T-Mobile offers the Samsung Galaxy Tablet which comes preloaded with the Samsung Media Hub allowing you to buy or rent movies and access on-demand TV. Other preloaded application includes Kindle for Android which allows you to read the largest selection of today’s most popular books.

Blackberry’s PlayBook Tablet has a HotSpot printing application allowing you to print documents securely to printers located around the world. Also, Blackberry’s MyNino Parent Application developed with an aim of tracking ones' child using smart phones. This application can assist parents to put their minds at ease.

5Linx introduced a new tablet at their national convention. The 5LINX Velocity™ tablet comes pre-loaded with the GLOBALINX® Mobile Video (GMV) App so users can make and receive voice and video calls whenever a Wi-Fi network is available. 5LINX Velocity™ tablet replaces the CU3000 video phone which also included web surfing, weather, alarms, news highlights and games.

Netbooks are another on the go option and is not meant to replace your laptop or desk top computer but is a lightweight model that offers document creation and on the go minor editing, as well as internet surfing, monitoring of social websites and catching up on emails.

There are so many options available it is hard to decide what is right for you. The trend seems to be to have one of everything. I am seeing more and more usage of tablets in church replacing bringing a bible and enabling faster location of quoted scripture. I am considering purchasing a netbook for travel as economical airline seats are getting tighter and tighter and making use of my 16” laptop uncomfortable to use. The very small netbook would allow me to use my flying hours as an efficiency tool to write and edit articles and documents, but then maybe I should buy a tablet instead. I will continue evaluating the options and just when I make a decision a new product will appear.

I am looking for feedback and information from my friends to help me make the right decision. Current users are always good sources for solid pros and cons.
