Make a Yo Yo Flower

yo you flowerYou can make a dimensional flower with seven yo yos. Six will be the same size and the center will be slightly smaller (the darker yo yos shown here are made from 3 1/2 inch circles and the beige yo yo is made using a 3 inch circle).

yo yo flowerDouble thread a needle and knot the ends together. Pick up one of the larger yo yos and pull out the center stitched area and then flatten it so that the edges meet in the middle. Take your needle and insert it into the center of the stitched area of the yo yo as shown in the photo. Leave a tail of thread hanging down from this first yo yo.

yo-yo flowerRepeat this step with the remaining five larger yo yos. You will have a string of yo yos on the thread.

yo yo flowerPull up on both ends of the thread, gathering the yo yos together. Knot the thread ends together with several surgeons knots. The extra twist of the surgeon's knot makes it easier to keep the tension on the thread while tying the knot. You will have this lovely blobby looking thing. It gets better, trust me.

yo yo flowerTug gently on the ends of the yo yos to pull the petals out and flatten the flower.

yo yo flowerTo finish the flower, attach the smaller yo yo to the center of the flower to cover the hole. Use a small slip stitch and tack the center to the gathers as you go around. Have your canine helper inspect your finished product (I think he was hoping it was a cookie).

You can turn this flower into a pin by backing it with a circle of felt and adding a pin bar. Or, sew onto a headband for a hair ornament. You can also use the flower to embellish a purse, pillow, or anything that comes to mind.

I hope you enjoy this project! Happy sewing!
