7 Most Popular Types of Blog Posts

A natural tendency for new bloggers is to jump into the pool quickly; pounding out post after post without taking time to plan, organize, or review. While this may be satisfying to your inner writer, it can bring confusion to your audience. So, what's a blog writer to do? Learn the different types of blog posts that can entertain, inform, and help your readership. After all, it is your readers, that will make, or break, the success of your blog.

Here is a list of the 7 Most Popular Types of Blog Posts for you to check out. Start with ones that feel comfortable to you and expand into the other types as you move forward. Each can be written as a stand alone post, a blog series, or guest post.

1. Instructional:

In our fast paced, highly technical society, many people are looking to learn how to do something. This can be for business or personal pursuits. And, it can be to learn a great deal or simply find an overview of some kind.

This type of blog post includes, How-to's, Tutorials, Cheat Sheets, Problems/Solutions, and Special Reports.

2. News

News posts can be about breaking news you have personal information about; or the popularly known “newsjacking” post.

News posts themselves, are the news stories that you have authority to write. A TV news anchor, for example, has the authority to write about and report breaking news that would be interesting or helpful to their TV viewers.

Newsjacking on the other hand, is when you take a piece of news and add your opinion to it. This is a way to bring your readership the most up-to-date information, or breaking news that can interest and/or help them.

3. Entertaining

Entertaining posts bring your readership fun and relaxation. These posts can be story based, anecdotal, or humorous. They can also be fact or fiction.

4. Lists

List posts are very popular because they allow readers to scan complex topics to find the information they need quickly. You can do topical list posts, or in-depth list posts. These types of posts do not use opinion or commentary. Instead, they teach in an orderly, easy-to-use fashion.

This type of blog post includes: Resources, Checklists, To-do's and FAQ's.

5. Media posts

Media posts are primarily used to bring information to readers through the use of media. Your post will be either in video format, audio, or infographic. These posts can utilize all the other types of blog posts, as long as the format is in media, and not the written word.

6. Specialty Posts

Specialty posts by nature are longer posts. They can be all written or use a combination of written word and media.

This type of post includes: Case Studies, Controversial Posts, Stories

7. Personal Spotlight, Interviews, Reviews

This final blog post type brings readers information through journalistic, or story-based writing. This can be achieved by using the written word alone, or incorporating media.
