Miley Cyrus Performance Sparks Outrage

Guest Author - Sue Walsh

Former child star Miley Cyrus has been capturing attention for her bold new style and wild image, a bold contrast to the all American girl she played on Disney’s hit Hanna Montana series for 5 years, but her vulgar performance at last weekend's MTV Video Awards has people saying she may have gone way to far in her efforts to break away from that image.

Cyrus appeared on stage wearing a leotard with a cartoonish teddy bear on it and sang her hit “We Can’t Stop” while gyrating with a gaggle of pink teddy bears, but the truly shocking moment was when she ripped the leotard off to reveal a skimpy, nude-colored latex bikini underneath and joined Robin Thicke as he performed “Blurred Lines”. As the married 36-year old father of one sang, Cyrus stood in front of him, bent over and began to “twerk”-the name given to a highly suggestive dance involving the grinding of the buttocks-while sticking her tongue out and playing with a large foam finger. Reactions ranged from shock to disgust, and for some, even anger. Several celebs took to Twitter to express their disapproval, and even Cyrus’s BFF Kelly Osbourne spoke out on her E! Network show “Fashion Police” recommending the singer keep her tongue in her mouth, Cyrus had little to say about the performance or the uproar it caused except to tweet her pleasure at discovering it has generated over 300 tweets per minute.

Father Billy Ray Cyrus didn't have much to say either. He did send a tweet asking for more love and less hate, but later stated he was referring to the violence in Syria. On the other hand, the Parents Television Council has had plenty to say, expressing outrage at the performance and harshly criticizing MTV:

“This much is absolutely clear: MTV marketed adults-only material to children while falsely manipulating the content rating to make parents think the content was safe for their children,” a spokesman for the group, Dan Isett, said in a press release. “MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate ‘twerking’ in a nude-colored bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds?”

An MTV spokesperson said the network had no comment. Cyrus obviously wants no part of her former all-American girl image and has been working hard to create a new, very adult one. This time though, she may have gone too far.
