Free Felt Pumpkin Pin

Guest Author - Tamara Bostwick

Fall is my favorite time of year for several reasons. When I lived in Arizona, the arrival of cooler weather was always such a welcome relief after the relentless heat of the summer. I also love the fall holidays because I am able to fully enjoy them without the pressure that follows soon after. I always set my expectations for Christmas preparations too high, which kind of makes me uh, shall we say, difficult to live with (my husband would say impossible - to that I say, to-may-to, to-mah-to).

Anyway. A few mornings ago, I felt a slight chill in the air...just a tiny one, but it was enough to make me feel like autumn is on its way (it comes much later and more stealthily here on the west coast). It's not time to break out the sweaters yet, but it did turn my thoughts toward fall projects, so I decided to add another felt pin design to my collection of free felt holiday pin patterns. This time I put together a fall pumpkin pin that uses three colors of felt and two colors of embroidery floss (you can see a finished example to the right). The pumpkin would also make lovely autumn themed napkin rings when sewn to bands of coordinating felt.

Click the link to open the Felt Pumpkin Pattern (the file is a .pdf, you will need Adobe Acrobat to open the file). The pattern will print on a standard 8 1/2" by 11" piece of paper. When you are finished printing the pattern, press the "back" icon to return to this page.

Felt Pumpkin Pin Supply List

  • Felt in the following colors: orange, dark or golden yellow, and medium green.
  • Embroidery floss in medium brown and dark green (play around with different color combinations).
  • 1 1/2 inch Pin backs (you can find these in the beading section of your local sewing and craft store; make sure you purchase ones with holes in the bar for sewing on)
  • Orange sewing thread (to match orange felt)
  • Embroidery needle

Cutting Instructions

  • From the orange felt, cut out two large pumpkins and the smallest pumpkin section.
  • Cut the medium pumpkin from the dark/golden yellow.
  • Lastly, cut two stem pieces from the medium green.
  • The pieces align together in a specific way, so it is important to keep track of which sides of the felt will be facing out. Place the two largest pumpkin pieces together so that the edges match up. The top surface of the one facing up will be the right side of that piece and the bottom surface of the underneath pumpkin will be the right side for that piece (this will be important later).
