Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town (1970)

This Rankin-Bass holiday favorite features the voices of Fred Astaire and Mickey Rooney. A young orphan is left with the Kringles, a family of toy making elves who live in the snow covered mountains. Once he grows older, Kris Kringle treks through the mountains despite the threat from the Winter Warlock and the Burgermeister Meisterburger, who ruthlessly rules the village of Sombertown and outlaws all toys. Here are a few movie mistakes to look for in “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” (1970).

• The forest animals with a baby Claus in tow knock on the Kringle’s door and run. Dingle opens the door and comes outside. The far view shows the sleigh that had been carrying the baby is pulled next to the mailbox. The red rope that the animals were pulling it with is on the ground and lying in front of the steps. The same view is shown when the other elves come outside and the rope is gone. The overhead view of the scene shows the sleigh is also gone!

• The elves give the baby to Tanta Kringle. The baby’s ID bracelet isn’t shown. But in the close-up, when Tanta says “Unusual name”, the ID bracelet is out and hanging over his blanket. It cuts to a wider view of the elves when Tanta says that they’ll call him Kris Kringle, and the ID bracelet is gone again.

• Tanta has the Kringle history book and they’re singing the “First Toymakers to the King” number. After Tanta comments about the dolls that always wink, the view from behind her shoulder shows the page in the back changes from the dolls to a teddy bear. But in the close-up of the book, the page is on the dolls again and changes to a picture of the King holding a teddy bear.

• When the guard introduces the Burgermeister before he walks down the steps, the view of the stairs shows no toy duck on them. But a moment later, the Burgermeister steps on one and falls down.

• There is a close-up of Winter when he says his icy heart is melting. He’s holding the train under his left arm and the front part of it is facing forward. It cuts to a wider view of Winter with Kris and the train is facing backwards under his arm.

“Santa Claus is Coming to Town” (1970) features the voices of Fred Astaire, Mickey Rooney, Keenan Wynn, Paul Frees, Joan Gardner and Robie Lester. It runs 48 minutes and is unrated.
