Fairy Gardening Book Review

Fairy Gardening Book Review
For those planning to create their own fairy garden, I definitely recommend a title released by Skyhorse Publishing. “Fairy Gardening-Creating Your Own Magical Miniature Garden” is by Julie Bawden-Davis and Beverly Turner. It is suitable for both novices and experienced gardeners. This is lushly illustrated in full color. Many of the illustrations emphasize the use of fairies.

Readers will learn all the basics on every aspect of miniature gardens from creating to maintaining one’s creation. Throughout the book, there are boxes with additional information and ideas. This title contains detailed instructions and guidelines for all aspects of fairy gardening. It features a comprehensive list of garden plants complete with descriptions. However, I found no hardiness zones listed for them. All types of plants are covered from taller miniature trees or shrub-like ones to low growing ground covers.

There is an entire chapter on choosing and using appropriate accessories, including fairies. In addition, another chapter also offers lots of tips on seasonal and holiday decorating for these diminutive gardens.

As the authors explain in the book, the overall aim of the miniature garden is to convey a story and theme. They give detailed instructions on how to go about choosing a theme and focal point and utilizing the elements of design in order to achieve the best results, which should be a real garden that just happens to be miniature. In addition, gardeners will learn how to plant and care for the garden.

The chapter on containers is especially helpful. The authors encourage readers to repurpose or recycle items they already have or check thrift stores and other sources with affordable, suitable containers.

The appendix features a list of sources from which gardeners can buy miniature accessories for fairy gardens. Some of the sources also sell miniature plants as well.

Turner is Head Designer at a nursery in California and has been designing such gardens for years. Her gardening seminars at the nursery are very popular. She is also an actress, director, and set designer. A garden writer, Bawden-Davis has authored gardening books as well as many articles for various publications.

For purposes of disclosure, I acknowledge receiving a review copy of this book from the publisher.
